Through Mary's Eyes: by Pineapple Chapter 1

Mary just stood there, stunned. She felt the room start to spin, and her eyes became glassy. She wanted to lay down, but couldn't move. After what seemed like hours, she stuttered a "W...wh..w-why Gra-ay?"

Mary's boyfriend, Gray, shurgged. "Well, Mary... you're a great friend... but I met someone else."

"WHAT?!" Mary shrieked.

"Well... she captivated me by her beauty... and when I met her, I liked her, but I had you, Mary. But, she gave me gifts and..."

At that, Mary lost her cool. "GIFTS!?! YOU'RE LEAVING ME FOR SOMEONE BECAUSE SHE GAVE YOU... PRESENTS!" After another moment, she whispered, "Who...?"

Gray blushed, and scuffed his feet. "Blondie."

"You... you're leaving me... I've known you for almost two years... for a girl... who just got here a week ago?"

Blondie was the new girl who had inherited her grandpa's farm. Mary hated the girl! She had suspected something, for Gray had been acting weird this last week.

"Gray..." Mary whispered. "Just leave."

Gray nodded solemnly, and walked out the door, leaving Mary in tears.

She looked at the calender, and remembered it was her birthday.

"Happy birthday to me..."

Chapter 2

Mary kneeled down in front of the calender, sobbing her heart out. How could he do this to her? And... and on her brithday? What kind of present was that? She remembered this morning...

Mary had woken up to the smell of cake. After a moment of confusion, she had remebered- it was her 19th birthday!

"Happy birthday, Mary!" she parents had cried in unison. Mary had rushed into thier arms, and cried. But, Anna quickly told her daughter to go open the Library! Mary had nodded vigorously, and rushed out the door.

When she got to the Library, she stood behind her little counter, waiting for Gray. The minutes ticked by, and with each passing one she became worried. Had her beloved gotten hurt? Forgotten? No. She shook those thoughts from her mind.

When Gray finally did come, Mary's heart skipped a beat. She had rushed to him and hugged him tightly. "I was afraid something was wrong!" she had told him with a shy giggle. "Or... this is silly, but I thought you had forgotten..." Mary stopped short when she had noticed the look on his face.

"Mary..." he had mumbled. "It's not working. I found someone else..."

Mary snapped out of it, her eyes blurry from tears. She wiped them away, and decided to close the Library for today. Who would come, anyway? Gray was the only one who came regularly- and it was a Thursday, so the Docter wouldn't come untill next week. She picked herself up and walked steadily toward the door. That door... Gray had walked through it many times. Today was the last...

"Stop it, Mary!" she scolded herself. "Just don't think about him..."

After Mary locked the door, she felt snow hit her head.

"Snow..." she mumbled. Then, she was in her house, under the covers, crying once again.

Author's Note~ And so ends Chapter 2... Chapter 3 will come soon! Feel free to tell me what you think! ^^

Chapter 3 Mary woke with a start, knowing something was wrong, but not remembering what. It came back to her so quickly it hurt. Gray... had left her. With that thought, Mary started sobbing once again. How could he do this? What could Blondie have given him that was so much more important than Mary's love? She huddled under the covers, cold and warm at the same time.

"Mary, sweetie?" Anna called softly. When nobody answered, Anna softly sat down near the lump under the covers. Mary poked her head out after quickly wiping her tears away.

"Mary, what's wrong?" Anna asked, worried.

"Oh... nothing." Mary tried to smile. "It's just that I... I lost a book!"

Anna looked surprised, but nodded. "Why don't you ask Gray to help you find it?"

Mary's smile faded, but she wasn't about to let her mom know what had happened yesterday. "Okay." she agreed.

"Good!" Anna said, beaming. "You'll find it! You can find anything if you just keep looking!"

After Anna left, Mary mumbled, "If I keep looking, will I find love again...?"

Chapter 4

After a few seconds of quiet, Mary decided to do something. She was not a whiner! She needed to get fresh air, maybe go shopping. Smiling a smile that wasn't fake, she changed and skipped down stairs.

"I see you're in a better mood!" Basil joked.

"Yup!" Mary giggled. "I think... I think I'll take the day off today! Maybe go shopping..." Basil looked concerned. "Mary darling, are you all right? You usually always want to open the Library!"

Mary nodded, but said, "I'll collect some herbs for you, kay?" She hurriedly kissed her dad on the cheek, and ran out the door.

Mary breathed in the fresh, cold, morning air. It was sunny, which was good. She noticed it was 9:10, so the Store would be open. But, Mary found herself walking past the Supermarket. Maybe she wasn't in the mood to shop... She stopped in front of the Clinic. Nope, she wasn't sick, physically, anyway. She didn't even consider going to Church- Carter was nice, but a bit... prying. He'd make her feel worse. Sighing, she began walking once more. To her disgust, she found herself walking toward Siabara's house!

"No!" she mumbled. Instead of walking inside, Mary strutted past, not looking back. She decided to go collect some herbs. She loved them, AND she had promised. Since it was Winter, the only herbs that grew were White. As she picked, Mary found herself lost in the joy of being outside.

After a few hours, Mary rushed back home. When she looked at the clock, she gasped. It was much later than she thought! It was already 7:40! Mary hurriedly took off her coat and got ready for bed. She grinned at her stunned parents and fell asleep almost immedietly.

Author's note~ And so ends Chapter 4. Chapter 5 is on the way! Thanks for the support!

Chapter 5

The next few days consisted of herb-collecting and errand-running, and Mary didn't care in the least. In fact, she was enjoying it! When the Starry Night Festival came around, she didn't remember untill Basil "reminded" her.

"Hey, Mary, want to help your mother make dinner tonight?"

When Mary gave him a puzzled look, he was surprised.

"Mary, tonight is the Starry Night Festival! Don't you want to invite Gray, like you usually do?"

Gray! No! Mary blushed, and answered, "Well... he's busy, you know, helping Siabara!"

"Okay, then, Mary." Said a puzzled Basil. "I guess its just you, me, and your mom."

Mary nodded, tears forming. "All right, then dad." Basil was too preoccupied to notice Mary rushing out the door.

"What am I going to DO?" she wailed. "I can't invite anyone- ESPECIALLY not Gray! He's probably already been invited by Blondie." Mary put on a brave face. "Oh well! I can still survive! I don't need a guy!"

"Mary, isn't Gray coming?" Anna asked.

"Uh... he's too... busy!" Mary answered. "Didn't Dad tell you?"

Anna shook her head.

"Heh, whoops. Sorry." Basil said, looking embarrased.

"Its OK, Dad!" Mary smiled, and took a bite. She almost choked on it, too.

"Mary!" Anna said, alarmed.

"I'm fine..." Mary gasped. The dinner was the same as the first Starry Night Festival she had had with Gray! But, she ate it just the same... Thankfully, neither parent questioned why thier daughter wanted to be excused and go to bed.

*** Chapter 6

The next day, Mary built up her courage and open the Library for the first time in almost a week. Her worried parents were relieved.

"Great choice, Mary!" Basil commented. Anna agreed.

"Oh. Well, thanks." Mary said, smiling. After a quick check of the time, she kissed her parents on the cheeks. "Gotta go! Bye!"

The fresh air felt nice on Mary's face as she stepped outside. It was yet another sunny day, a sign that Spring was getting near...

"Watch it!" a very familiar voice growled. It sounded just like-

"GRAY!" Mary yelled in surprise. Gray, by the look on his face, seemed shocked also.

"Sorry," he mumbled, pushing past her.

"Well, good morning to you, too!" Mary yelled back as she stomped into the Library.

"Well, its closing time!" Mary said to herself. As usual, nobody had entered the Library. But, she didn't mind. She would have been annoyed beyond reason if Gray had set one foot into her Library.

"Hello!" Mary called cheerfully as she came inside her house.

"Hi, Mary!" Anna greeted her. "Did you have a nice day?" Mary nodded.

"Good. You are going shopping with me tomarrow, right?" Another nod. Then, Mary walked upstairs and flopped onto her bed. In a moment, she was fast asleep.

*** Chapter 7

The rest of Winter had been snowy and blustery, so horrible that the Library had only been open once. So, it was a relief when the 30th of Winter came.

"Mary, can you get the door?" asked Basil. "I heard a knock!"

Mary nodded, although no one saw her, and walked to the door. There was Thomas, peeking through the window.

"Mary, hello." he told her. "I'm afraid... I've got bad news."

"What?" she asked, alarmed.

"You know the Old Man, the one who lived next to Blondie?"

"Y..yes."

"He... passed away this morning. His grandson, Jack, is arriving soon to take over the farm."

"Oh. Thats so sad! Poor Old Man..."

"Well, I have to deliver the news! Good day!"

Mary came back inside, and told her family the news.

"Oh dear!" Anna had cried. "Poor old dear! I wonder who his grandson is?"

Mary said nothing, but was thinking the same thing. Would Jack be as idiotic and mean as Blondie? Would he ignore her as most of the town boys did? Or-

"Mary! You're late! Its almost 10!" Basil yelled.

"Eek!" Mary shouted, and ran outside to open the Library for one of the last uneventful days she'd have in a while...
