The Return parts 16 - 20
part 16: Barley vs Doctor...Barley threw himself at the doctor, his fingernails growing to an enormous length. Doc sidestepped the old man, who turned with cat-like speed. He moved as if to attack, but suddenly Barley dropped to his knees. He cast a pleading look up at Doc.
"You tried to kill me!" Doc snapped."Why should I help you?"
"You're a doctor!" Barley gasped. "You help those in need!"
"I help the living.You're beyond my help,"
Barley shrieked and leaped at the doctor, biting into the young man's leg. Doc yelped, but it was more of an instinctive response than an actual cry of pain: Barley wasn't wearing his dentures.
With his free leg Doc kicked at the old man's face. Barley recoiled. Doc kicked him again and again. He did not stop until he was sure that Barley was dead. Dead for good. To be continued
Part 17-Two Doors-...."I hafta pee!" Stu whined.'And I'm hungry! I wanna go home!"
Elli glanced over at the door where Carter and Manna were still deep in conversation. She took her brother's hand and led him to one of the two doors on the rear wall of the church. The left-hand door, the one Elli and Stu passed through, led to the back part of the church. The confession booth and Carter's private rooms were located there.
The other door led outside. May looked at that door for a long time. She was scared of her mom and of Harris, but she longed to go outside. Then, May remembered that Carter had said she was safe on church grounds. She opened the door and went outside.
Joanna was waiting for her.
Part 18-A Loving Mother-....May turned and tried to get back inside the church, but Joanna grabbed her by the waist.
"Carter!" May screamed.
"Hush!" Joanna said."May, we're going to be together now!"
Carter raced outside with Manna close behind him.
"Joanna!" she gasped. "I thought you said she couldn't touch the church grounds?"
"The backyard is not consecrated ground," Carter replied grimly."Joanna! Put May down!"
"Why do want to separate a mother and daughter?" Joanna wailed. May was weeping furiously and struggled to escape Joanna's arms.
"I'm scared!" May sobbed.
"Hush, baby, it's okay. Mommy's here," Joanna crooned, stroking May's glossy pigtails.
"Put me down!" May shrieked and she bit Joanna's thin arm. Joanna screamed and flung May to the ground.
"Little brat!" Joanna snapped.
Carter ran over and scooped May into his arms.
"Is this how a loving mother treats her daughter?" he yelled.
Joanna threw her head back and howled. The air grew cold and a thick fog swirled around them.

Part 19- Joanna Destoyed-....The wind began to howl as the air temperature plummeted. The thick mist swirled violently around Caret, May and Manna. Joanna howled, her head thrown back like a wolf. May, in Carter's arms sobbed loudly.
With a shriek Joanna launched her pale thin body at Carter and May. Cater leapt to one side, just missing being hit by Joanna, who continued forward, propelled by her own momentum, through the open church doors and into He church itself.
Joanna began to howl again, in pain this time, not rage. A bright light began to emanate from her body, growing brighter and brighter. Cater, Manna and May had to turn their eyes away from the blinding light. Joanna's howling began to die down, ending in a soft sigh. When Carter walked into the church, Joanna was gone.
Elli and Stu walked out of the bathroom hand-in-hand.
"What was all that noise?" Elli asked.
TO BE CONCLUDED (FINALLY!)
The Conclusion!....A few weeks later....May and Stu were playing out in front of the church. Since the deaths of Joanna and Barley, May had lived with Stu and Ellen and both children were happy with the arrangement. Harris had been buried in the church graveyard and no one ever knew how he really died. Sometimes, at night, May woke up crying and, night or day, she didn't ever want to be alone. Right now, though, as Carter watched the children play, he felt sure that May would be fine.
THE END!whew! 20 chapters! i don't think i'll be writing such a long fanfic any time soon!
